Lancome vs. Lumene

February 21, 2014

skimpor splurgeeyemakeupremoverI fell in love with Lancome’s Bi-Facil eye makeup remover- it is pure magic! Gentle on the eyes, this oil-free solution gets rid of even the most stubborn waterproof mascara.

I then stumbled upon Lumene’s formula in Ulta. It looked the same-blue bottle, solution separation (looks like when oil and water mix), so I grabbed it on a whim. I was pretty pumped about the cheap cost, too. That night, I used it.  It felt and worked nearly identical to Lancome.

Both are ophthalmologist tested, oil free and great for sensitive eyes and those who wear contacts. Either one you choose, you can’t go wrong. Lancome will always be my favorite, but knowing Lumene exists now makes it hard to justify spending $28 when one works just as well for 1/4 of the price!

Beauty Talk: Vichy Cleanser

January 15, 2014

I’m a product junkie- tried and true; confessed and accepted! I love beauty products and am always seeking the best. I’ve come across an amazing cleanser at Ulta that I have completely fallen in love with- Purete Thermale 3-in-1 Cleanser by Vichy.

Vichy is a region in France known for its healing thermal waters dating back to the 1600s. Royalty would often visit for dermatological treatments becoming a destination for the elite. In 1903, Coco Chanel was a “water girl” for Vichy before she ventured into the fashion world. The Vichy Brand of 80 years have encompassed the essence of this region creating state-of-the-art skincare.

Purete Thermale 3-in-1 cleanser is a cleansing milk, toner and makeup remover all in one. Free of parabens, dyes and harsh sulfates, this cleanser is perfect for all skin types-even sensitive. Although the directions state you can just apply with a cotton ball and no rinsing is needed, I can’t stand the thought of leaving anything on my skin. Cleansing is the art of rinsing away impurities, right? So I apply, massage in and rinse.

This cleanser is amazing! It really does remove even the hardest waterproof mascara and lip-stains while leaving my skin soft, clean and supple (thanks to the generous amount of vitamins and thermal water).  I highly recommend this product.

If $19.50 sounds costly for a cleanser, just think about this: you don’t need to buy makeup remover or toner. So, in reality, this cleanser is a smart choice for everyone. You won’t be disappointed!

Play That Funky Music

January 2, 2014

Whoever said teachers aren’t cool or adventurous was completely wrong! Two teachers from Texas decided to venture out of the classroom and spin some records as a side business. Little did they know that there venture would take off and become such a success! And take it from me, they are awesome! How do I know? They were the DJs for my wedding-from the music to the lighting, my reception was perfection! Here’s there story!

Laura Mayfield: “Jason and I met in college at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview. He came to Wayland from Wichita Falls, and I came to Wayland from Pueblo, Colorado. We were actually laughing because we literally started talking about marriage the first week we met. Jason was a music major and I was an education major.  Jason was a music minister at a small church and started collecting PA speakers and sound equipment for his praise band. It wasn’t for a couple years when we were teachers that we started to DJ. It was honestly not intentional, the high school where we were teacher needed a DJ for a school dance and Jason had the equipment. I DJed because I have been a music collector since I was a small child. Somehow it just clicked…

Over the past 11 years (we have been married 12, almost 13 years) in business God has blessed our company in the most unbelievable ways. We have been lucky enough to work with some we amazing couples. For me, (Laura) I still moved by each couple I work with. As crazy as it sounds, I am moved that in this day and age, with divorce as high as it is, I am always moved when two people find each other and make that commitment to one another. We work very closely with out couples to give them their special day, that often after the wedding we are blessed to call so many of our clients friends. That is so special to us.

The best part about or business is that we do it together. Jason is the host and I work with our couples to make sure that when I DJ it is a reflection of their unique style. We have two little girls and we love that we are able to provide for them by doing something that we both love so much. It really is our business that we build from the ground up. After the new year we are really excited because our business is going to be making some awesome new changes. First, we will be expanding and as a result we will have a new take on our old name. We will become Mayfield Events. (This is so that we can now take on Day of Coordination, custom lighting, concert sound rentals and DJing.) The other things we are thrilled about is that we have been named 2014 Best of Wedding by TheKnot.com. This award named us among the top 8 wedding DJs in the DFW area, and most importantly, it was something that we were rated on based on our service to our previous brides.”

We hope that this story inspires you. No matter what you are doing at this moment, what your occupation is or how far away your dream may seem to be, always know that with a desire and hard work, anything is possible. So what are you waiting for?

6 Soul Resolutions

December 3, 2013

Screen shot 2013-12-03 at 5.41.01 PM

Summer isn’t even here, so why am I already thinking about bikini season and those painful trips and excruciating journeys to the mall in order to find the perfect swimsuit? Why does something so small have to be such a daunting and depressing task? Most swimsuits only have about 1-2 yards of fabric incorporated- some-even less! It’s a self vs. self, self vs. society’s skewed body image ideal, and self vs. mirror conflict.

It is so funny how superficial and shallow we can become. We will nearly kill ourselves for a flat stomach, but we will ignore an unfit relationship with our minds and souls.

So how do we prepare for the swimsuit challenge? We amp ourselves up with a great playlist on our iPod, plan out our meals and work out. We say goodbye to carbs, sugar, fatty foods, fried meals and carbonated beverages and say hello to water, fruits, veggies, lean meats and the gym. We do whole-body cleanses, rid our body of toxins, ignore harmful additives and dyes and renew our inner self. We sit in saunas, sweat through our tanks doing cardio, tackle circuit training and do other forms of crazy exercise. Even though it’s a daunting task, it’s so worth it to lose those 5, 10, 15, 20 extra unwanted pounds and gain self-confidence, a sense of accomplishment and begin a healthy lifestyle.  We feel like stronger, powerful and healthier women when we work out physically. With this being said, why is it so hard for us to work out spiritually or get emotionally healthy?

It is so funny how superficial and shallow we can become. We will nearly kill ourselves for a flat stomach, but we will ignore an unfit relationship with our minds and souls. These relationships are the most important things a woman can have in her life. Why can’t we seem to get motivated to cleanse spiritually, do relationship cardio and walk in full stride towards becoming the healthy and well-rounded women we were called to be?

Sometimes I’d much rather run 5 miles after a 30-minute circuit training session than have to address personal weakness and issues that deal with the heart and soul.

Screen shot 2013-12-03 at 4.48.21 PM

I think it’s due to a pain, need for self-control and a sense of uncomfortable vulnerability that far outweighs any workout’s demands. We have to be real, be open and continuously be vulnerable- not always easy! Sometimes I’d much rather run 5 miles after a 30-minute circuit training session than have to address personal weakness and issues that deal with the heart and soul.

What does one have to offer with only a beautiful, hollow shell? My favorite quote, Proverbs 31:30 states that  “charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” This reminds me that our actions and words should reflect truth and integrity. One day, our wrinkle-free faces will have smile lines; our hair will turn gray with age; and our bodies not quite like they once were.

Crunch your inner struggles, detox your unhealthy surroundings and run (actually sprint) from unnecessary negativity. Keep hitting the gym and salad bars by all means, but start getting in shape all around.

 Our 6 Soul Resolutions:

1. We will make time for self-reflection (prayer, meditation, journaling, quiet time)

2. We will make time for positive and inspirational relationships (ladies’ night out, date night, family game time)

3. We will make time to give back to the community (service at the local homeless shelter, donating old clothes)

4. We will love our bodies (workout, eat clean, accept what we can’t change)

5. We will love our souls (positive self-affirmations daily)

6. We will love one another (encourage others-especially other women-be a cheerleader)
